Alabama District and Pilot International ProjectsIn 1990-1991 Pilot International adopted a service focus of “Brain Related Disorders”. This focus is the basis for many of the Alabama District Projects. The Signature project for the Alabama District is usually the Alabama Special Camp for Children and Adults. More commonly known as Camp ASCCA, a camp where disabled persons can enjoy a resident camp experience. The camp also uses "reverse mainstreaming" in which non-disabled persons are included with disabled persons. The Alabama District of Pilot has a long history of support with Camp ASCCA. The "Pilot Queen" pontoon boat, two ski boats, aquatic equipment, tubes, skis, supplies, and many camperships have been given by Pilots over the years. Recently the District completed a $25,000 commitment to support the 'water display' in the Oscar C. Dunn Rotary Environmental Center. A floating golf range and new communications infrastructure were also recently completed by the Alabama District. Since the early 1990s, , Alabama District has donated over a quarter of a million dollars for projects at Camp ASCCA. The Alabama District also maintains yearly contributions to CARE Alabama. CARE is one of the world's leading humanitarian organizations fighting global poverty. In over 70 developing countries, CARE helps poor families create lasting solutions to their most threatening problems. In the last decade CARE Alabama has helped millions of people around the world. Founded in 1987 by Ben and Luanne Russell, CARE Alabama is the only statewide campaign that raises and matches funds before sending them to CARE. Since the beginning, the Russell's have a fund that each year matches "dollar for dollar" donations made to the campaign. BrainMinders™, the signature project for Pilot International, was introduced at the International Convention in Denver, in July 2001. This public service campaign features Public Service Announcements for the media promoting awareness of brain injury and prevention messages. Using puppets or stuffed animals as a teaching tool, members have taught young children to “protect their brain for life” in the BrainMinders™ Program. The BrainMinders™ Buddies™ program structures injury prevention “Play Safe, Play Smart” through the story “Wise Old Owl and his Fuzzy, Funny, Smart and Sunny BrainMinders™ Buddies”. Gerald Giraffe - helmet Safety, Martin Monkey - playground safety, Penny Panda - seatbelt safety and Fiona Fox - crossing the street safety, illustrate how to play safe and play smart. A sixteen page coloring book includes information and activities for the parents and coloring pages with tips and activities for the children. The Alabama District reads the BrainMinders™ story to thousands of children each year. Pilot International partners with St. Jude Hospital and has helped raise funds for their special projects. Pilot also partners with Project Lifesaver, a program that uses GPS transmitters to locate people who have wandered from home because of Alzheimer’s disease, autism, Downs syndrome, traumatic brain injury, or other brain-related disorder. Project Lifesaver can save hours of searching and anxious waiting of family members, as well as thousands of dollars in costs for local government when someone wanders away from home and becomes lost and most importantly, it saves lives.” The program serves people of all ages with brain-related disorders, and often cases of lost patients involve days of searching, and may end in tragedy. Nationally, Project Lifesaver rapid-response teams have been responsible for over 1,000 rescues and have an astounding 100% success rate. Alabama Pilots have many training opportunities throughout the year. Regional workshops are held in each of the four district areas. A Fall Council and District Convention are planned each year. Please refer to the calendar of events for dates and locations.
