Alabama District and Pilot International HistoryAn excerpt taken from a 1969 Pilot Cookbook The first Pilot Club was organized in Macon, Georgia, in 1921, with a Charter membership of 40. The name PILOT was chosen as it means Leader and Guide and the word International was added because the farsighted founders visualized an organization which would become international in scope. Pilot Clubs were organized rapidly, a tribute to the soundness of the foundation laid by the first club, and an evidence of the widespread approval of women or an organization through which they could work together for a better world-community. Pilot principles are Friendship and Service. Upon these principles may be built a better business, a better community, a better nation, and a better world. Pilot Clubs are organized for the purpose of promoting active participation in any movements which tend to improve the civic, social, industrial, and commercial welfare of the community. The community's need is the Pilot Club's opportunity for service. Each club selects and directors its own civic, service, and social welfare projects. Pilot Clubs cooperate with existing community agencies and national and international drives that benefit humanity. Projects such as health, social welfare, youth, senior citizens, safety education, etc., are instigated and sponsored. The service projects of Pilot International have included the donation of an ambulance to the Red Cross in England during World War II; affiliation with Vimoutiers, Orne, France in 1949, as a continuing project for several years, to assist this village in rebuilding following its devastation during the war: and the sending of seeds to more than 10,000 British gardeners when food rationing was in effect in England following World War II. Pilot International promotes safety education al programs and an annual safety conference sponsored by Allstate Foundation. Other international projects include granting scholarships to students from other countries and sponsoring Compass Clubs for college girls and a club for teenage high school girls, similar to Circle "K" and Key Clubs for boys. Headquarters for Pilot International was established in September of 1939, in the Persons Building, Macon, Georgia. At that time there were 79 clubs and 2,100 members. There are now more than 15,000 members and 500 clubs located in Bermuda, Canada, England, France, Japan, and the United States (including Hawaii). The Headquarters office is administered by the Executive Director, and from this office is published the official publication, THE PILOT LOG. Due to the growth of the organization and the demand for additional office space, the colonial house was purchased and converted to meet the needs of the Headquarters office in 1964, the twenty-fifth anniversary year of the establishment of Headquarters in Macon.
