Anchor

Since Pilot International was chartered in 1921, Pilot Clubs have undertaken service projects involving young people and their needs. In 1952, Pilot adopted the program of sponsoring Anchor Clubs. Anchor is now 50 years old and is made up of over 10,000 members.

Anchor Clubs can be found throughout the United States, Bahamas, Japan and Argentina. Anchor Clubs take many forms - some are affiliated with schools; some are not. Some are all female; some are coed. Some are large; some are small. Some clubs in the US are in organized Anchor Districts.

Anchor members discover the importance of working together--no single member can accomplish the service that the members can as a team.

Membership in an Anchor Club allows young people to make a dynamic difference in their world through volunteer service...and have FUN while helping others. Anchors learn valuable skills that prepare them to be good citizens for the rest of their lives. They have opportunities to lead and organize service projects and play active roles in club programs. Often they work side by side with their sponsoring Pilot Clubs to promote awareness and provide hands on service to people with Brain-Related Disorders.

Regardless of affiliation, size, or composition, one thing is true of all Anchor Clubs: they exist to provide volunteer service to those in need. Like their sponsoring Pilot Clubs, Anchors Clubs take on service projects that will meet the needs of their schools and communities.

Every year Pilot International Districts send in their winning Anchor Club entries.  The entries involve very large, elaborate albums, limited to size now because it was so overwhelming for the judges who once got 4 to 6 inch thick books, to read and rate, daunting to say the least! The artistry and detail is impressive. The projects and enthusiasm of the Anchors is infectious. All of our Anchor Clubs are winners! However, the judges are charged with the responsibility of selecting winners. New judges are chosen each year and at the very end of their task they are always complimentary of our Pilot and Anchor Clubs. Here’s what they had to say:  On a scale of 1-10 all three judges awarded the most 10s for Walker High School Anchor Club’s organization, professionalism and projects. Of special interest are the Anchors enthusiastic participation in several events in Special Olympics;  the Angel Tree for funding clothing and gifts for foster children; the Arthritis Walk; Hurricane relief; Teen pregnancy awareness; the opening of a new Park for children, and their BrainMinder presentations to a variety of groups.  Past Anchor Advisor of the year Beth Kennedy actively oversees and coordinates the Anchor projects with the Pilot Club of Jasper and many other organizations. The Walker High School Anchor Club set three major impact goals for 2008-2009. To impact and inform the school and community about brain related disorders... Impact and improve school and community through valuable volunteerism projects... and finally to Impact the lives of fellow students through Anchor membership. It is easy to see why this is the second year in a row that Walker High School has won first place.

The Anchor Club of Walker High School was named International Anchor Club of the Year at the Pilot International Convention in Phoenix, Arizona.  They are sponsored by the PC of Jasper, AL! From BrainMinders Presentations to swim meets at Special Olympics, Walker Anchors truly “Leap into Service”. Walker Anchors were recognized by the State of AL for their many hours of volunteerism at the Special Olympics swim meets.  Walker Anchors also strive to incorporate Brain Related projects into club activities such as jointly presenting BrainMinders presentations with their sponsoring Pilot Club and pumpkin carving activities with the special needs class at a local elementary school. Walker Anchors truly leave “Impressions for Life” which is why they are the Outstanding Anchor Club of the Year!

The Anchor Club of Enterprise High School, AL co-sponsored with SADD the "Day of the Dead."  The purpose was to make students aware of the fact that a teenager dies in an accident every 28 minutes (many of which are alcohol or speed related).  The Grim Reaper took a person from class every 28 minutes throughout the day to emphasize this fact.  The faces of the students were painted to make them appear dead and a sign was hung around the neck of each indicting how they died.  Each student then returned to classes and could not talk for the remainder of the day.

Cathy Ellison advisor to the Geneva High School Anchor Club, Geneva, Alabama was given a Honorable Mention by Pilot International for her support and dedication to the Geneva High School Anchor Club which has enabled the Anchor Program to grow and build better communities.
